Patrimoine caché du Sud-Aveyron

Staying at Camping Vert Lavande in Belmont-sur-Rance means enjoying an exceptional natural setting… but also discovering one of the richest heritage areas in southern Aveyron. Within less than 45 minutes of the campsite, Gothic churches, Templar bastides, hilltop castles, listed villages, and landscapes shaped by time await you. And since I regularly explore the surrounding area to better guide my visitors, here is my personal selection — tried, tested, and never disappointing.

Churches and Chapels: Southern Aveyron Through Spirituality and History

Collégiale de Belmont-sur-Rance (just steps from the campsite)

A must-see from the moment you arrive. This majestic 15th-century Gothic church overlooks the village. Inside: impressive vaulted ceilings, luminous stained-glass windows, and a peaceful atmosphere.

It tells the story of Belmont-sur-Rance better than any book — from the time of the canons to the period when the Jesuits turned it into a place of learning.

Chapelle Notre-Dame d’Orient à Roquecezière (15 minutes)

A small marvel perched on a rocky promontory, offering breathtaking panoramic views over the Rance Valley.

A pilgrimage site for centuries, reached via a beautiful nature walk, it’s the perfect place to pause, breathe deeply, and admire the silence.

Église de Combret-sur-Rance (25 minutes)

In the heart of a listed medieval village, this Romanesque church charms visitors with its typical bell-gable tower.

Here, every stone seems to whisper echoes of the Middle Ages.

My personal tip: If you’re visiting in summer, don’t miss the Thursday night market. Crafts, music, a warm atmosphere… and people dancing all evening in the village square. A true slice of Aveyron life.

Castles of Southern Aveyron: A Journey into the Middle Ages

Château de Coupiac (30 minutes)

A beautifully restored medieval castle with two large round towers.

The visit is lively and educational, with workshops and activities for both children and adults. You step straight into castle life — effortlessly.

Château de Montaigut (40 minutes)

Perched on its rocky spur, it dominates the entire Dourdou Valley and offers one of the most stunning panoramas in the region.

Inside, you’ll discover how the site evolved through the centuries — from defensive fortress to lived-in residence.

A must for families: the visit is extremely fun for children. They can dress up for free as knights or Templars, and even try on chain mail for the strongest among them. The “Knights’ Trail,” designed as an investigative game, leads them throughout the castle — with obvious joy and pride shining in their eyes.

Château de Saint-Izaire (35 minutes)

A striking episcopal castle built of red sandstone — rare and powerful in character.

The immersive visit transports visitors into the heart of local history, with carefully designed staging and a strong architectural identity.

Historic Villages and Bastides: The Authentic Charm of Southern Aveyron

Belmont-sur-Rance

A former 13th-century Templar bastide, built on a grid plan.

Narrow streets, old houses, a market hall, remnants of the ramparts… it’s a village best discovered slowly, letting the stones guide your imagination.

Camarès (15 minutes)

In the heart of the spectacular Rougier landscape, this village offers a surprising red and luminous setting.

A medieval bridge, charming lanes, heritage treasures, and an excellent market complete the visit.

My personal tip: stop at the artisan biscuit shop. The owner loves sharing his expertise, explaining each step of the process… and, of course, offering generous tastings. A gourmet break no one regrets!

Brousse-le-Château (45 minutes)

Listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, it feels like a living postcard: medieval bridge, hilltop castle, tightly clustered houses, and charming winding streets.

Perfect for a full day out.

My Favorite Heritage Circuit (1 Day)

To discover as much as possible without rushing:

  • Belmont-sur-Rance → Roquecezière → Coupiac → Camarès → back to the campsite

Around 60 km of discoveries, panoramic views, stories, and delightful surprises.

After the Adventure… Time to Relax at Camping Vert Lavande

After a day exploring the heritage of southern Aveyron, nothing compares to returning to the gentle atmosphere of Camping Vert Lavande.

Set down your bag, breathe in the cool air from the river, enjoy the site’s peacefulness… and let the emotions of the day settle.

Then there’s the campsite’s guinguette — a friendly little corner where you can enjoy simple local dishes, generous ice-cream sundaes, or a drink on the terrace… often while replaying the day’s journey in your mind or sharing discoveries with neighboring tables.

Here, culture and nature respond to one another. Here, every stay tells a different story.

And yours — when will it begin?
